About the ignite programme

The ignite programme will be run by a dedicated team of Firefighters and Fire Staff from Killingbeck Fire Station.

Sessions will run alongside the crew's 2-2-4 shift rota, giving you an insight into the Firefighter shift system. Sessions will run fortnightly from 7pm to 9pm (19:00 - 21:00) during the week, and 10am - 12pm (1000 - 1200) on a weekend. The next programme will begin at the start of September 2023 until mid-January 2024 (dates of each session will be shared with you at a taster day).

You will be required to attend a taster day to join the programme, either on 12th or 13th August 2023. The taster day will provide further information and help you to understand what to expect from the programme, as well as a fitness element.

By the end of the programme, you will have developed a good understanding of what a Firefighter’s role is. You will have developed your skills, values and competencies to support you in your future career. If you have an interest in working for the Fire Service and want to develop yourself, this programme is for you!

What to expect from the sessions

Sessions will cover key areas, including:

  • FF Core skills (fitness, pumping water and using a hose and ladders)
  • Water Rescue (dry suits, throw lines and rescue techniques)
  • Casualty Care and First Aid
  • Road Traffic Collision (vehicle stabilisation, glass management and door removal)
  • Technical rescue with the line rescue team
  • Incident simulation (breathing apparatus, search and rescue techniques)
  • Hazmat (gas tight suits and decontamination)

You will be supported to complete a Fire Prevention project over the course of the programme. This will involve identifying a fire safety issue within your local community and identifying a way to make West Yorkshire safer.
