Bonfires and fireworks can lead to risks of serious burns if not lit, and supervised with caution. Attending an organised event means you can enjoy the celebrations with family and friends, knowing the appropriate safety measures are in place.
District Commander Dale Gardiner says “Bonfire Night can be a time of celebration for us all, but it also has the potential to leave people with serious injuries if we don’t take precautions. Fireworks and bonfires can be the cause of serious burns, or out-of-control fires if we don’t take care, so we’re encouraging people to celebrate, but to do so safely.
“We’d always recommend going to an organised display but if you must celebrate at home simple tips can keep you safe. Never return to a lit firework, throw fireworks or carry them in your pocket. If choosing to have a bonfire, keep it well away from buildings, garages, fences and flammable materials, ensure it is always supervised and have water nearby.”
Chief Superintendent Sareth Humpage of West Yorkshire Police, said: “As in previous years we will have an additional policing presence on our streets on 5 November to reassure residents and help keep communities safe.
“We hope those taking part in the Bonfire celebrations have an enjoyable evening and urge those using fireworks to do so safely and responsibly in line with the advice from the fire service.
“We will of course investigate reports of anti-social and criminal behaviour involving fireworks and use all means at our disposal to identify and take action against those responsible.
“Officers continue to work with partners including trading standards, the fire service and schools to restrict illegal firework sales and reduce anti-social behaviour.
“Bonfire Night is traditionally one of the busiest nights of the year for the emergency services and I would ask the public to consider this when calling us. Please use our online options where possible and only use 999 to report emergencies, or where a crime is in progress.”
