Area Manager Scott Donegan said “We’re grateful to the public for taking our safety advice seriously and helping to ensure that most celebrations were safe and enjoyable. The slight rise in emergency calls was anticipated due to the drier weather compared to last year, and thanks to months of preparation, our teams were ready to respond effectively.
“I want to recognise the hard work of everyone involved – from our Control Room operators and frontline crews to those supporting behind the scenes. It’s a collective effort. That’s why it’s so disappointing when our staff are subjected to violence while simply doing their job. We continue to work year-round with communities to raise awareness of the impact of antisocial behaviour.
“These attacks are unacceptable and can put lives at risk by delaying emergency responses. We’re working closely with West Yorkshire Police to identify those responsible and take appropriate action.”
Assistant Chief Constable Damien Miller at West Yorkshire Police said “I would like to thank the majority of the public who have enjoyed this period safely and responsibly.
“Unfortunately, there are a small minority who choose to get involved in anti-social behaviour and criminality and we have again attended a number of incidents where fireworks have been directed at people, vehicles and property.
“I understand that these incidents cause fear and concern in our communities and I want to offer reassurance that they will be fully investigated.
“Sadly, we have also seen incidents where emergency service personnel and vehicles have been targeted. These attacks on the people out working to keep our communities safe are completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. We will do all we can to bring those responsible to justice.
“I know there are still a number of events planned over the coming days and into the weekend, and I would urge people to continue to follow safety advice and to use the appropriate channels to report any anti-social or criminal behaviour, only using 999 for genuine emergencies or where a crime is in progress.”
With Bonfire Night celebrations still due to take place this weekend the public are being encouraged to attend an organised event if possible. For more safety tips and information on celebrating safely please click HERE.
