Trainee Firefighter Course 215 Gets Under Way
On 23rd March 2026, 24 new wholetime firefighters began the next stage of their journey with West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service as Course 215 got under way.
At the drill yard at West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters, the cohort officially started an intensive 16-week training programme designed to prepare them for life on the frontline.
Their arrival reflects our continued commitment to making West Yorkshire safer - supporting communities through prevention, protection and emergency response, and ensuring we have the skilled people needed to serve when it matters most.
Our latest cohort of trainee firefighters has started a rewarding and demanding programme that will prepare them for the realities of operational life. Bringing enthusiasm, resilience and a shared commitment to public service, these 24 recruits represent the next generation of firefighters who will go on to serve communities across West Yorkshire.
Each recruit brings their own story, perspective and motivation for joining the Service, but all share one common purpose: to help protect people, property and the environment when it matters most.
Over the coming weeks, they will develop the core operational skills needed for a career in the fire and rescue service. Their training will cover a wide range of specialist areas, including breathing apparatus, road traffic collision response, casualty care, line rescue, water rescue and hazmat.
Alongside the practical and technical elements of the course, they will also be challenged to work together under pressure, build trust in one another and strengthen the teamwork that sits at the heart of everything we do.
Nicola Bowers, Section Head of Operational Training, said:
“It is always a proud moment to welcome a new cohort of trainee firefighters to West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service!
Course 215 has already shown real enthusiasm and commitment, and over the next 16 weeks they will be challenged, supported and developed as they begin building the skills, knowledge and confidence needed for the role. We are excited to see their progress and wish them every success as they begin their journey with the Service.”
As Course 215 begins this important chapter, we look ahead with pride and excitement. The weeks ahead will be demanding, but with dedication, discipline and teamwork, these recruits will begin building the foundations for a career spent serving the people of West Yorkshire.
We wish Course 215 every success as they begin their training and look forward to seeing their journey unfold in the weeks and months ahead.
