Kit on. Miles in: West Yorkshire emergency services unite for Morley 10K

Emergency service teams from across West Yorkshire are getting ready to lace up their trainers and take on this year’s Morley 10K - all in support of The Fire Fighters Charity.

Taking place on Sunday, 5th October, the volunteer-led, not-for-profit event will bring together teams from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS), West Yorkshire Police, Yorkshire Ambulance Service and the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) for 10 kilometres through the heart of Morley.

And for some, running 10K isn’t quite challenging enough…

Emergency service colleagues will tackle the route wearing different levels of operational PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), including fire kit with breathing apparatus (BA) and wildfire kit – highlighting some of the physical demands emergency service personnel face while protecting their communities.

Last year, the team raised an incredible £2,500+ for The Fire Fighters Charity. This year, they’re hoping to go even further.

Strong strides, stronger purpose

Firefighter Ben Moody, Morley Fire Station, said:

“There’s something really special about seeing colleagues, friends, families and the local community come together for the Morley 10K.

It’ll also be a great opportunity for people to come along, meet their local firefighters and other emergency service colleagues, and get behind everyone taking part.

Taking on a 10K is a challenge in itself, and we’ll be doing it in fire kit, BA or wildfire kit, so it’ll certainly put us through our paces! But there’s a real purpose behind every mile - raising money for a charity that’s there for the fire and rescue community when people need it most.”

Asif Mahroof, Assistant District Commander for Leeds, added:

“Morley has a fantastic sense of community, and the 10K is a great example of what can happen when people come together for a shared purpose.

Last year, we raised more than £2,500 for The Fire Fighters Charity, and we’d love to build on that this year. Having colleagues from across our emergency services taking part alongside friends, families and the local community makes it even more special.

Whether you’re running, donating or simply lining the route and cheering everyone on, every bit of support makes a difference. We hope to see Morley out in force on the day.”

More than miles

Every donation will go directly to The Fire Fighters Charity, which provides lifelong support to serving and retired firefighters, fire and rescue service staff, volunteers and their families.

From specialist physical rehabilitation and mental health and wellbeing support to nursing services, the charity is there for members of the fire and rescue community when they need it most.

Every mile covered - and every pound raised - will help make sure that support continues.

Come and see us

There’ll be plenty happening away from the running route too.

#TeamWYFRS will be carrying out community engagement throughout the day, giving people the chance to meet their local firefighters, talk to our teams and find out more about the work we do to help keep communities safe.

There’ll also be the chance to get up close to a fire engine - perfect for younger emergency service fans (and the not-so-young ones too!).

So, whether you’re running, supporting someone taking part or simply heading into Morley for the day, come over, say hello and help us get behind everyone taking on the challenge.

Support and find out more about the fundraising here: 10 kilometres. Different kit. One community. One brilliant cause.

Kit on. Miles in. See you in Morley!
