Bingley firefighters to take on 72-mile challenge ahead of Grenfell Tower anniversary
Firefighters from Bingley Fire Station are set to take on a 72-mile charity challenge in memory of the 72 people who lost their lives in the Grenfell Tower fire, ahead of the ninth anniversary of the tragedy later this year.
On Sunday, 3rd May 2026, Bingley Red Watch will take on the challenge outside Bingley Fire Station, using a rowing machine, exercise bike, ski machine and treadmill.
The event, called 72 for the 72, will run from 10:00am to 3:00pm, or until the distance is completed, and will raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity.
The Grenfell Tower fire happened on the 14th June 2017, with 2026 marking nine years since the tragedy. For many across the fire and rescue sector, it remains a moment of reflection, remembrance and respect - and a lasting reminder of the importance of community, safety and standing together with all those affected.
Firefighters from Bingley Fire Station are inviting the local community to come along, show their support and help raise money for a meaningful cause.
Visitors will have the chance to meet the crew, find out more about the work of West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, and pick up practical fire, water and road safety advice for their community.
Plans for the day include opening the station doors, with the fire engine and boat on display, as well as the water flume. There will also be safety advice, refreshments and an opportunity to meet local #TeamWYFRS firefighters.
Firefighter Matt Broadbent, from Bingley Fire Station, said:
“We wanted to do something a little different in Bingley - something that remembers the 72 people who lost their lives at Grenfell, while raising money for The Fire Fighters Charity and giving people a chance to come together in support of a good cause.
“Grenfell is something that continues to resonate across the fire and rescue sector. This challenge is our way of showing respect, while also doing something positive for The Fire Fighters Charity, which provides vital support to firefighters, control staff and fire service personnel across the UK.
“We’d love people to come down, say hello, support the crew and find out more about what we do. It’s about remembrance, community and raising money for a charity that means a lot to our Service.”
