Rastrick fire station opened on 17 June 2015 and is situated to the south east of Halifax, approximately two miles from Brighouse and Elland. The location provides a quick response into Brighouse, Elland and the higher risk area of north Huddersfield; it is also ideally situated to provide quick access to the M62. The station area is semi-rural; it has a population of approximately 57,000 and incorporates around 24,000 dwellings.
The team at Rastrick is made up of a station commander (who also commands Mytholmroyd and Todmorden Fire Stations), 24 firefighters and a station clerk. The crewing system at Rastrick provides fire cover 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. Also, the station is one of only two stations in West Yorkshire that houses a powerboat and provides module four swift water rescue response.
The team work closely with local agencies and community safety partnerships who offer assistance by identifying those members of the community most at risk and providing referrals, they also help by providing assistance to vulnerable members of society, who reside in the area. Their aim is to continue working with partner agencies to make Rastrick and its surrounding areas a safer place for all residents and visitors
School talks and attendance at galas also raise the profile of the station and provide additional ways of ensuring that the fire safety message is delivered helping to make Rastrick and West Yorkshire a safer place.
Continuing alongside our community activities, we ensure our preparedness for operational incidents by extensive local and inter-agency training and improve our intelligence on the key risks and hazards we may face at an incident by a programme of visits to local business and industry.
The station boasts a fully accessible multi-purpose room, which is available for community use and may be shared with our service partners such as Neighbourhood Policing Teams.
There was an official station opening on 28 July 2015, followed by a community open day in August.
The consolidation of Brighouse and Elland resources at a new fire station will deliver significant efficiency savings whilst maintaining a high level of service delivery and providing employees with vastly improved accommodation facilities.
The new location provides first fire appliance coverage which is more proportionate to risk than the current arrangements.
