West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service shortlisted for national diversity award

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) has been included amongst a strong list of shortlisted nominees for the Inclusive Companies Awards!

The awards aim to recognise individuals who work to remove barriers and put diversity at the very heart of everything they do.

WYFRS has been shortlisted for the Diverse Marketing Campaign of the Year for our drive to encourage women to consider a career in the fire service so we can better represent the communities we serve.

The campaign linked in with International Women’s Day in March this year.

It featured several initiatives including female firefighters meeting a young girl who wanted to be a firefighter and a video showing female firefighters in an operational setting at a multi-agency exercise.

WYFRS is listed alongside a brilliant pool of other campaigns, featuring work from The Royal Air Force, Mothercare, Holland & Barrett, Channel 4, Changing Places Campaign and Manchester United.

Chief Fire Officer John Roberts said: “We’re thrilled to be recognised by the Inclusive Company Awards for our campaign around International Women’s Day 2019. As a fire service we try to be as inclusive as possible – so it was important to us to champion the fantastic women we have here.

“Equality is a big issue, especially with some stereotypes in the media that firefighters have to be men – so we’re pleased to spread the message that women are just as valuable to the service.”

Diversity and Inclusion Manager at WYFRS, Gill Cockburn, said: “It’s brilliant news that we’ve been shortlisted by the Inclusive Companies Awards – as they are renowned for recognising employers that challenge discrimination and fight against inequality.

“Diversity and inclusion are such key themes of 2019 – and we’re still facing discrimination from some areas which don’t see that women can be firefighters. This campaign proves they can do it just as well as men can – a hugely important message for all women out there.”

Paul Sesay, Founder of the Inclusive Companies Awards and National Diversity Awards, added: “The Inclusive Companies Awards continue to be an exceptional way to celebrate the courageous actions of individuals and organisations, who are already striving for inclusion. Let’s celebrate the tremendous feats of our incredible shortlisted nominees, Congratulations to all!”

Winners will be announced at The Hilton Manchester Deansgate on 28th November.
