From the District
The people of Bradford can be assured that we are making the district a safer place to live and work.
We have set out plans to prioritise our services in the community over the coming year and we would encourage you to take a look at these plans in detail.
Bradford Risk Reduction Plan 2013-14 and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Action Plan for 2013-14
In the coming year we will ensure our resources are targeted in the appropriate areas to ensure the greatest effectiveness in reducing the numbers of fires and other incidents.
Our priorities are as follows:
- to deliver a proactive fire prevention and protection programme. Stopping fires before they occur is our first priority. To date, our actions have delivered significant success and we want to build upon this. We believe our successful community safety strategy lies in the links we maintain with our partners and we plan to strengthen and increase these to deliver a professional and resilient emergency response service
- to provide a safe, competent and diverse workforce
- to provide effective and ethical governance and achieve value for money in managing resources.
New Appliances for Bradford District
Fire Response Unit
Fairweather Green (FWG) Fire station has recently taken ownership of a new Fire Response Unit (FRU). This vehicle based at FWG will operate throughout the Bradford district within a designated area. Its primary role is to tackle small fires, car fires and attend certain automatic fire alarm actuations. This allows for other appliances to be available for more serious incidents. FRUs are staffed 24hrs a day 7 days a week.
Resilience Pump
A resilience pump has been provided on two stations within the Bradford District, Keighley and Bradford. These pumps will provide fire cover in areas of the District/County where emergency cover is depleted. Resilience pumps are not continually staffed but will be activated during periods of anticipated (e.g. training exercises) or unexpected high levels of operational activity and in response to significant events which could affect emergency response; such as wide area flooding, bonfire night, periods of bad weather or spate conditions. These pumps can be staffed within an hours notice.
About this district
The Bradford district is in the north west of the county. It covers an area of approximately 140 square miles and has a population of more than 500,000.
It is ethnically, culturally and geographically diverse. Bradford district is also an economically challenged area, containing a large range of socio-economic groups from the wealthy to the very deprived.
These factors create a wide variety of risk profiles that we must monitor carefully through operational staff in conjunction with a dedicated community safety team, arson task force and fire safety department. Much of the effectiveness of the district’s community safety strategy lies in the links with local authority partners.
