Wakefield Fire Station area covers 35 square miles incorporating a diverse community of over 91,951 people. The area consists of a variety of industrial, commercial, residential and rural locations together with the 39,549 dwellings within the station area. The makeup of the station area provides a wide range of different incidents for the staff to deal with using a pumping appliance, a brand new Combined Aerial and Rescue Pump (CARP), and a specialised flood rescue vehicle.
The station has a station commander and 48 operational firefighters working a 42 hour week on a shift system. The staff are specially trained in flood provision and rescues from swift water as well as their usual firefighting and rescue skills. The station is very active in partnership working to reduce risk and improve safety for the Wakefield public and is the headquarters for the successful Young Firefighters Scheme. The fire station was built in 1963 and borders with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.
