About

Shipley Fire Station is situated on Saltaire Road.  The station was built in 1977 and comprises offices, training and accommodation facilities and an appliance room that houses one water ladder fire appliance.  The station is wholetime (24/7) and the team is made up of a station commander (who also manages Idle), 24 firefighters and a station clerk who provides administrative support.

The station area covers the southern part of Bradford which includes the mainly residential locations of Baildon, Nabwood, Frizinghall, Saltaire and the commercial areas of Shipley. The population is 43,856 and the station area incorporates 18,676 dwellings.

In addition to the fire appliance the station provides facilities for the ambulance service providing a base for both ambulance and paramedic emergency response staff.

The station commander and station personnel liaise with the Neighbourhood Policing Team, various Council Ward Officers and attend local Neighbourhood Forums.  This partnership liaison, in addition to the work carried out by our Arson Task Force is aimed at protecting people by reducing the numbers of fires within the Shipley Station area.

Pilot Scheme

Shipley fire station is taking part in a pilot scheme to identify vulnerable, at risk (from fire), people within the community. We are using a range of tools including a software programme called Mosaic, which recognises lifestyle factors to find probable areas where people may be at risk. In addition to Mosaic we use West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue incident data, along with our own experiences of incidents attended. In collating all this information we aim to target these areas, to give fire safety advice and install smoke detectors where required.

In conjunction with this work we are also promoting the ‘Friends of the Fire Service’ scheme. This is a scheme where we identify members of the community who have some affiliation to groups who could identify at risk people. Our aim is to invite these people to become ‘Friends of the Fire Service’ so that they can refer, to us, at risk people. Anyone wishing to take part in this scheme can contact Shipley fire station.

The pilot is constantly reviewed to enable us to identify good practice and if the pilot proves to be a success the scheme will be rolled out to other fire stations next year.
