About

The station, covers the eastern section of the Wakefield district and includes the vilages of Wentbridge, Ackworth, Darrington and East Hardwick and also the residential areas of Carleton, Chequerfield, Willow Park, Monkhill, Nevison, Larkshill and Eastbourne.  As well as these built up areas, it also covers a large section of the M62 from junctions 31-34. Pontefract station also borders with North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.  The station area is approximately 16.89 square miles and has a population of 35,928.  The area incorporates 15,298 dwellings.

The team at Pontefract is made up of a station commander and 24 firefighters.  Staff work with local agencies and community safety partnerships who offer assistance by identifying those members of the community most at risk and providing referrals.  They also help by providing assistance to vulnerable members of society, who reside in the area.  Pontefract staff continue to forge strong links with the Neighbourhood Policing Team to jointly improve the safety of the area.  Staff aim to continue working with partner agencies to make the Pontefract area a safer place for all residents and visitors.

Staff from Pontefract and neighbouring stations will be working in partnership with Wakefield Council and Pontefract New College to raise awareness of young driver safety and aim to produce resources to educate the local community and reduce accidents and injuries from road traffic collisions.

The new Fire Station has been designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘very good’ environmental performance rating and incorporates a range of high performance building and insulating materials and services.  A grey rainwater harvesting and re-use system has been installed to collect rainwater for use in flushing toilets and there is a further surface rain water collection and storage system to assist with fire training procedures.  Roof mounted solar panels pre heats the domestic hot water supply.
