Batley Fire Station, built in 1983, covers an area of approximately eight square miles, serving a population of 55,149 people. The station covers Batley, Hanging Heaton, Soothill, Staincliffe and Heckmondwike an area which incorporates 21,146 dwellings. The area served includes PPG paint manufacture, Tennants chemical distribution and Fox's biscuits. In addition the Birstall Retail Park and cinema site plus the Batley Mill Village retail complex are in the area that Batley fire station crews are responsible for. The station is crewed 24 hours a day and has a staff of 36 firefighters, one station clerk and a station commander.
The station has two fire appliances, one pumping appliance and one command unit which is a specialist communications vehicle used at large incidents throughout West Yorkshire. On average, the station responds to 700 emergency calls each year.
As well as emergency response work, Batley Firefighters are extremely proactive delivering fire prevention work in the community, visiting over 100 workplaces and 1000 private homes each year to give fire safety advice. The crews also work very closely with Batley neighbourhood policing teams and Kirklees Council on safety and anti social behaviour initiatives for the area.
