    New GPS System Gives Fire Engines Green Light

    Fire engines in West Yorkshire are benefiting from faster response times and safer journeys thanks to pioneering new GPS technology.

    West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is the first emergency service in the UK to use the ‘Green Wave’ traffic light recognition system, which it is hoped will save lives.

    Official opening of Normanton and Pontefract fire stations

    The brigade opened two new state-of-the-art fire stations in the Five Towns on Friday, 27 April.

    Both Normanton and Pontefract stations were officially opened by the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Dr Ingrid Roscoe at ceremonies also attended by the Shadow Home Secretary, the Rt. Hon. Yvette Cooper, MP for Castleford and Pontefract.

    Pontefract will become the first 'Blue Light' complex in the county, with West Yorkshire Police and Yorkshire Ambulance Service sharing the facilities.

    One for the road

    Firefighters were joined by paramedics and police to stage dramatic drink driving accidents across the Bradford district.

    The mock extrications were organised by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service as part of Alcohol Awareness Week, which was spearheaded by Bradford Council.

    An actor played the part of the drink driver and was cut from the car by firefighters from Bradford Fire Station.

    Events were held in Bradford and Keighley. This extrication took place at Centenary Square in Bradford city centre. ITV Calendar's Chris Kiddy took part and the event was broadcast on the local evening news.
