The Dementia Friendly Todmorden group officially launched earlier this month with guest of honour Cherie Blair CBE, QC, and they are not resting on their laurels!
Firefighters from Todmorden Fire Station have helped set up a monthly café, called the DF Tea Rooms, held at Todmorden Town Hall on the first Saturday of every month, where soup, sandwiches and drinks are served for the small charge of £2.50.
Many local businesses have offered their support, including Morrisons in Todmorden, who have generously provided the food for the café free of charge every month.
The money raised by the DFT café is to be put back into the community, for example, plans are currently in place to provide more benches in Todmorden town centre as it is felt that there is a lack of places to be able to sit and rest.
All are welcome at the café where people can seek safety advice from a firefighter and arrange a FREE Home Fire Safety Check. They can also be signposted to other relevant services if required.
Assistant District Commander for Calderdale, Toby May, said: “Thanks to the hard work that has already been done, word is now starting to spread about what the group is trying to achieve. The launch and the monthly cafés are just the start for DFT and Todmorden Station plan to continue their active partnership with the group.”
Organisations present at the launch event included West Yorkshire Police, The Alzheimer’s Society and Calder Valley Search and Rescue Service.
Future initiatives include the provision of free training courses to offer awareness and advice for local shops/businesses in Todmorden.
A FREE Home Fire Safety Check can also be booked via our website www.westyorksfire.gov.uk or by calling 0800 5874536.
