Rare cattle rescued from blaze

Firefighter extingushing fire with water hose

Around 80 rare-breed cattle were rescued from a blaze in a barn at Temple Newsam, Leeds, last night (23.01.11) thanks to the quick-thinking of firefighters.

Firefighters from Gipton, Stanks, Garforth, Leeds, Hunslet and Stanningley were initially called to the fire at 6.45pm. They tackled the fire using five large jets and two ground monitors.

Station Commander Andrew Alderson, who was in charge of the incident this morning, said: “I can’t praise the firefighters enough for the job they did ensuring the cattle were removed from harms way.

They also managed to contain the fire to one half of the building. It was a fantastic effort all round.”

It is believed many of the cattle were pregnant. They included such breeds as Beef Shorthorn, Belted Galloway, Gloucester, Kerry, Red Poll, Shetland, Vaynol and White Park.

A number of crews from fire stations around West Yorkshire have since attended the incident as relief and it is expected fire crews will remain on the scene, damping down, for a few days to come.

Specialist fire investigation officers are currently at the scene and an investigation into the cause is under way.
