Pensioner Thanks Firefighters For Coming To His Rescue After He Fell In The Road

Geoffrey Whiteley popped into Illingworth Fire Station this week to thank firefighters for coming to his aid after a nasty trip in Keighley Road earlier in the month.

Firefighters from White Watch happened to be passing close to St Mary’s Church in Illingworth when they spotted Geoffrey lying in the road and fortunately another car had also stopped in front of him to help.

The 86-year-old, who lives in Halifax, had been on his way to see his sister and believes he just became exhausted from overexertion which led to the fall.

He said: “It felt like they came to me before I hit the floor! I was relieved – they were a gift from heaven!

“I just wanted to come down and express how thankful I was for their help in my moment of need.”

Firefighter Nicola Leah added: “We came across a car with Geoffrey in front of it. We thought the car had run him over but that’s not what happened. The lady had seen him fall over and stopped to help him out.”

Firefighters helped Geoffrey to the pavement and gave him some oxygen, reassured him and kept him warm.

The retired vehicle mechanic, who has three sons and four grandsons, went to hospital for a check-up and fortunately was not injured in the fall.

The incident happened at 1730 hrs on March 8.
