Brigade Celebrates Success Of Safety Work

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s work to cut emergency call-outs has paid off, the latest figures can reveal.

Extensive prevention work carried out by firefighters and safety staff in communities across the county has resulted in the brigade seeing its total number of incidents falling from 34,270 in 2009/10 to 21,400 in 2014/15. This is a drop of 37.5 per cent over the past five years.

Further figures published in the Performance Management Report, which was today (26/06/15) presented at West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority’s Annual General Meeting, show arson has almost halved during the past five years (10,897 in 2009/10 to 5,499 in 2014/15), malicious false alarms have more than halved (713 in 2009/10 to 329 in 2013/14) and road traffic collisions attended by firefighters have reduced from 1,060 to 640.

WYFRS has carried out 343,112 home fire safety checks since April 2009.

The report put to councillors also revealed that WYFRS exceeded all targets for 2014/15, cutting the number of deliberate fires by 20.8 per cent more than the target and malicious false alarms by 30.1 per cent.

Director of Service Delivery, ACO Dave Walton, said: “These figures are a glowing example of how we are committed to making West Yorkshire safer. Prevention is at the heart of everything we do and with every smoke alarm installed, each school we visit and gala we attend to spread safety advice, we are saving lives. However, we will not rest on our laurels because there is still much work to do and we are determined to drive down these figures even more.”

Councillor Judith Hughes, Chair of West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority, said: “These figures speak for themselves. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has a very determined and forward-thinking workforce who are committed to making the county a safe place to live and work.”

A number of projects and high profile prevention campaigns have had an impact on reducing fires and emergency incidents in recent years. These include:

  • Work of district fire prevention teams to provide tailored and targeted work in tackling both accidental and deliberate fires. Prevention officers work closely with local authorities and the police to help clean up the streets and tackle fly-tipping, as well as identifying vulnerable people and educating them in fire and road safety.
  • Work of fire protection in educating businesses and carrying out vital inspections.
  • Operational crews and prevention staff have worked alongside partner agencies to drive down the number of RTCs and educate in water safety.
  • Establishment of a youth training team. The team manages the highly successful Young Fire Fighters Scheme. The project teaches basic life skills and fire related skills, while at the same time fostering relationships with young people and encouraging respect for the emergency services.
  • Home fire safety checks carried out by both prevention staff and firefighters in their local community.
  • High profile media campaigns which have targeted the most vulnerable to fire and road traffic collisions. The campaigns have reached people via newspapers, TV , radio and social media, as well as on screens in public places.
