West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service will be supporting this year’s Eid and Guy Fawkes Celebration in Agbrigg, Wakefield.

Visitors to the event on Friday, November 16, will be urged to sign up for a free home fire safety check, which usually involves the fitting of free smoke detectors.

The brigade’s chip pan display unit will also be at the event, at Agbrigg and Belle Vue Community Centre, Montague Street, to demonstrate the dangers associated with chip pans and how quickly fires can spread.

The free event for women and children under 16 has been organised by Sahelian, Wakefield’s Asian mature women’s group. There will be fireworks, food, jugglers, street entertainers, Middle Eastern dancers and music.

Shabana Kosar, Community Fire Safety Officer, said: “This is an ideal opportunity to raise awareness of fire safety and the dangers associated with fireworks, especially during this time of year when people are using more fireworks than ever before to celebrate the various festivals such as Eid and Diwali.

“I am hoping this event will encourage many people to sign up for a free home fire safety check to help us reduce death and injury and help us keep our community safe.”
