Dewsbury Fire Safety Officer Khalid Patel is to receive a Chief Fire Officer’s Commendation for running to the rescue of a shopper who collapsed in a supermarket.

Khalid, who is based at Dewsbury Fire Station, Huddersfield Road, was shopping at Asda in the town on December 22 last year when he heard a member of staff shouting for a first aider. He responded to find a man in his 50s laid on the ground, not breathing.

He, along with a lady from the Army Cadets, carried out cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until paramedics arrived. They used a defibrillator, which was successful and the man regained a pulse.

Although the identity of the man remains a mystery, he survived the collapse thanks to the quick-thinking pair.

Khalid will receive the commendation from Assistant Chief Fire Officer Craig McIntosh this Friday, November 2, at West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s headquarters. Khalid and the lady have also both been nominated for a National Lifesavers Award and are soon to find out if they have been successful.

Khalid said: “I am honoured to receive a commendation from the Chief Fire Officer. I have West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service to thank for training me in first aid, as if I did not have those skills, I would not have been able to help the man. As far as I am aware, he made a good recovery, which is good to know.”

Chief Fire Officer Phil Toase said: “Without a doubt, Khalid’s quick-thinking and first aid training saved the life of this man. I am incredibly proud to present him with this much-deserved commendation.”
