West Yorkshire’s first multi-agency firefighting exercise involving moorland will take place this Sunday, September 30.
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service will lead a large second alarm training exercise at Keighley Gate, Ilkley Moor, involving partners who own and manage the land, Bradford Council and Bingley Moor Estate.
Ten fire appliances will attend the operation, close to the area devastated by fire last year.
Watch Manager Andy Newman, who developed Operation Wildfire, said: “We have learned a great deal since last year’s fires on Ilkley Moor, but of course we want to develop procedures even further in order to protect our precious moorland.
“All fire stations that have moorland in their area now have an information pack, which includes maps, access routes, water supplies, contact numbers for landowners, helicopter policies, whether the site is of special scientific interest or special area of protection, which applies to Ilkley Moor.
“Sunday’s exercise will be of particular value because it will give us chance to test and develop procedures alongside our Ilkley Moor partners.”
