It now takes less than 58 seconds for the county’s fire control to mobilise appliances following a 999 call.

This is nine seconds faster than the average time taken last November and two seconds faster than the ambitious target set by local fire chiefs.

“The speed of attendance to a serious incident can mean the difference between life and death so it’s critical that the time taken from accepting a call from British Telecom to the mobilisation of staff and appliances is as swift as possible,” explained Councillor Philip Booth.

The Chair of West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority said: “the logistics of getting the right resources to the right place in the quickest possible time has become increasingly sophisticated and our Mobilising and Communications Centre (MACC) at fire HQ in Birkenshaw has some of the best equipment available to help it do the job.

“However, the people who make the whole process work so smoothly are our highly-trained and dedicated control operators who often keep calm and professional heads  in the most distressing and demanding of circumstances and are a real credit to the service.”

All operators are trained to give fire survival guidance to callers trapped in a building – providing vital information on how to stay safe until appliances arrive at the scene.

MACC also refers requests for general advice re. home fire safety checks and the fitting of smoke alarms etc. to the brigade’s community fire safety officers.
