West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service will be in full support of the brigade band next week, as it attempts a 24-hour playing marathon at Asda in Pudsey.

Shoppers will be able to browse while they listen to the beautiful sounds of the band’s chamber music groups, including a brass quintet, a wind quintet, a flute choir and other groups, who will play at the supermarket in shifts starting 4pm Friday, September 7.

They will play a variety of pieces, ranging from Brückner to the Beatles, to raise funds for the band’s trip to the Menin Gate at Ypres in Belgium, where they will perform in remembrance ceremonies this November.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service will be there to support the band at the Owlcotes Centre supermarket, for its final stint between 10am and 4pm on Saturday.

Community fire safety staff will be on hand to offer advice and book free home fire safety checks, while firefighters from Stanningley and the brigade mascot, Blaze Bear, will also be there to meet and greet shoppers.

Brian Robson, Senior Community Fire Safety Officer for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and band Chairman, said: “Band members are great ambassadors for the service and give their time freely to entertain members of the public. They also realise the importance of the safety of the public, so this event will be a great opportunity to get that message across.”

To book a home fire safety check, which includes the fitting of free smoke detectors, call freephone 0800 587 4536 or visit www.westyorksfire.gov.uk
