The new Fire Minister, Parmjit Dhanda MP, visited West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Birkenshaw headquarters to encourage officers and staff to continue the good work across the county.

The MP for Gloucester, who has responsibility for the fire and rescue service, watched a spectacular line two rope rescue, which was carried out by the Urban Search and Rescue unit from the balcony of the brigade’s new Technical Rescue Training Centre.

Mr Dhanda, accompanied by West Yorkshire Chief Fire Officer, Phil Toase, Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Simon Pilling, and Chairman of West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority, Philip Booth, also visited the service’s Mobilising and Communications Centre.

The Cleckheaton-based Urban Search and Rescue unit was purchased as a result of the Government’s £200m New Dimension programme, to enhance the Fire and Rescue Service’s capacity to deal with large scale incidents including terrorist attacks, industrial and domestic accidents and natural disasters.

The service’s High Volume Pump, based at Stanningley, which was deployed nationally in the recent floods, is another example of equipment introduced under the New Dimension programme.
