The new Minister for the Fire and Rescue Service, Parmjit Dhanda MP, will watch a spectacular rope rescue when he visits West Yorkshire tomorrow.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Urban Search and Rescue unit will perform the line two rescue from the balcony of the brigade’s new Technical Rescue Training Centre. They will rescue a casualty, who is secured to a stretcher.

The unit will also demonstrate the capabilities of the equipment used to rescue casualties in building collapses and explosions.

The Urban Search and Rescue unit, which is based in Cleckheaton, was set up and the new equipment purchased as a result of the Government’s £200m New Dimension programme to enhance the Fire and Rescue Service’s capacity to deal with large scale incidents including terrorist attacks, industrial and domestic accidents and natural disasters.

The High Volume Pumps which were deployed nationally in the recent floods are another example of equipment introduced under the New Dimension programme.
