First Save Defibrillator

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service carries the FirstSave automated external defibrillator (from hereon to be known as AED) on all of its pumping appliances, thus increasing its first aid capabilities. The units are simple to operate by suitably qualified personnel and increase the survival chances of heart attack victims. The FirstSave AED is designed to form part of a comprehensive first aid package.

The Firstsave AED is lightweight, robust and is suitable for use in outside environments. It is fully self-contained and powered by a 5-year extended life lithium battery. The AED has only one button for all operations. Disposable single use electrodes are used with the unit. The AED automatically analyses the patient’s cardiac rhythm and determines whether the rhythm is shockable. The AED only administers a defibrillation pulse when a patient is exhibiting one of the following shockable cardiac rhythms: -

Ventricular fibrillation

Ventricular tachycardia

Any other cardiac rhythm with ventricular rates equal to or greater than 180b/min.

Rescuers are guided through any rescue attempt by voice prompts from the AED.
