TIRFOR EQUIPMENT

The Tirfor is a patented hand operated pulling and lifting machine with an unlimited rope travel. It works by pulling directly on the Tirfor Maxiflex wire rope, the pull being applied by means of two pairs of self energising smooth jaws which exert a grip on the rope in proportion to the load being lifted or pulled. The initial pressure which causes the jaws to grip the rope and give the self energising action is provided by powerful springs.

The two levers actuating the jaws provide a forward or backward motion to the rope, depending on which lever is used.

There are four models in use within the West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, the T12, TU16, T35 and T30 (model type indicated on a nameplate on the body).

On the models T35 and T30 the forward operating lever is fitted with a two speed change. The first one is used for medium speeds to give a lifting capacity of about two tonnes (low position). The second speed enables the unit to be used at full lifting capacity at a slower working speed (high position).
