The new Trainee Firefighter course programme consists of 11 modules and is 13 weeks in duration and is based upon the current National Occupational Standards.

In summary the programme will consist of:

The course places an emphasis on skills acquisition and provide an increase in scenario based training to promote the acquisition of ‘contingency and environmental management skills’ and provide opportunity for consolidation of foundation knowledge, skills and understanding.

Knowledge acquisition will be broadly ‘safety critical’ only and will utilise traditional methods of learning and ‘e’ learning modules.

Formative assessments will be utilised to provide feedback through tutor, self and group assessments at regular intervals throughout the course. Summative assessments will be used to check on safety critical learning and provide evidence for accreditation and quality assurance.

The new programme places an emphasis on the creation of a deep learning environment and a move from the more traditional disciplined, militaristic course to a culture of tolerance, opportunity but coupled with high achievement and the maintenance of high standards with trainees taking full responsibility for their own performance, appearance and safety. The Trainee programme allows full integration and parity in the training of wholetime and retained firefighters.
