The Band was originally formed in 1960 as a brass band, together with a Pipes and Drums band. In 1986, the Band changed its formation and became a military style concert band. Throughout its history, the Band has played at many prestigious events. However, more recently the highlight of the Bands career, so far, took place in 2003. The WYFRSband was asked to represent the West Yorkshire Fire & Civil Defence Authority in ‘The Spirit of Fire’ concert at the Royal Albert Hall on the 29th June 2003. The Concert was to celebrate the diamond jubilee of the Fire Service Benevolent fund.

The Bands main role is to play at all official Fire Service functions when requested – notwithstanding this, it is free to play whenever and wherever its services are required.

The band undertakes a variety of commercial engagements throughout the year frequently playing at Race Courses, Gala Days, Remembrance Parades, carnival processions and static concerts. The Band can be asked to play anywhere and whatever the requirements, the band is able to provide suitable music. One of our annual highlights is playing for the Queens Night Dinner at the International Fire Service Training College at Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire.  The band also has an international presence. In September 2000 the Band travelled to Izegem, Belgium, to take part in an International Music Festival.  There are plans to hopefully take part in this again in the future and also to tour Spain.

The band is also a Concert band which is a unique arena that combines the talents of thirty plus musicians to produce a sophisticated musical performance.  We play a comprehensive repertoire which includes music from West End shows, overtures, Marches, Easy Listening music, popular music and traditional Last Night of the Proms style music.

The band can also perform as a full Military Marching Band. There is no better display than a Military marching Band.  The Band marches at carnivals, international tattoos, military extravaganzas and official Fire Service ceremonies.
