2 November 2007

West Yorkshire’s firefighters have been given a public vote of confidence.

Over ninety-five per cent of people responding to questionnaires in the 12 months to  April 2007 praised the service with 96 per cent of those contacted following an incident in their home saying they found staff efficient, helpful and polite.

Councillor Valerie Binney, who chairs the fire authority’s Audit Committee, explained that service satisfaction questionnaires were randomly sent out each month with returns evaluated by an independent research company.

During 2006/7, 700 questionnaires were posted to homes and businesses, attracting a 33 per cent response rate.

“Perceptions are vital to building confidence in our public services,” said Councillor Binney. “We have to listen and learn.”

People are questioned not only about the service’s speed and effectiveness of response but about how they are dealt with at the scene, the value of any fire safety information provided and areas for improvement.
