Popular Bhangra group Sahara visited Bradford Fire Station to back West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s smoke alarm campaign.

Herbie and Gurps Sahara urged members of the public to book a free home fire safety check, which usually includes the fitting of free smoke detectors.

Research shows that black and minority ethnic households are less likely to own a working smoke detector, with Asian households the least likely to do so.

Gurps said: “This is an important issue, not only within the Asian community. Fire does not discriminate against anyone. It is important we get this message across.”

Herbie added: “We were honoured that West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service asked us to back this campaign. If we can give something back to the community then that’s great.”

Brian Robson, Senior Community Fire Safety Officer, said: “We are really pleased that Sahara have agreed to help in our campaign to reduce deaths and injuries from fires in the home. With their help we hope to visit as many families as possible to give advice and to reduce the risk of fire.”
