More than 300 children from schools all over Wakefield will qualify as Danger Rangers between October 15 and 19.
Danger Rangers is a multi-agency scheme hosted by Wakefield Fire Station, which involves West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, West Yorkshire Police, Wakefield District Council and Wakefield District Primary Care Trust.
The Deputy Mayoress of Wakefield, Coun Jacqui Williams, and her consort Darren Byford will visit Danger Rangers from Lofthouse Gate Primary School on Thursday, October 18.
The nine and ten-year-olds will learn how to avoid dangers and stay safe, learning from practical scenarios such escaping from a bedroom fire, dialling 999, compiling evidence at a road traffic collision and identifying signs of illegal drugs or dangerous substances.
Trevor Wainwright, Community Fire Safety Officer for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “This is an ideal opportunity to involve children in activities that will make them aware of safety issues affecting their lives.
“The fire and rescue service will be concentrating on the dangers most associated with our role, which is fire safety. However, the range of other agencies involved means that children get a varied programme of activities and a wider awareness of other dangers in society.”
