Mirfield firefighters are in training to lug a 10.5-tonne fire engine 2.5 miles in the name of charity.
The team of 10 retained firefighters will pull the Volvo fire appliance from the John Cotton mill – which is also sponsoring the event – in Huddersfield Road, Mirfield, to the Swan public house, also in Huddersfield Road, on Saturday, August 18.
All proceeds raised through sponsorship of the firefighters will go to the Trudy Ramsden Memorial Fund, which was set up in memory of the much-loved fire control operator who died of a brain tumour last year, and Mirfield Sports and Social Club.
Firefighter Mick Loney, who has organised the event, said: “It will be a real test of strength and stamina, but we are ready to rise to the challenge.
“We are keen to raise as much money as possible for our chosen charities and to raise their profile. Trudy Ramsden was a long-serving member of the Mobilising and Communication Centre and is sadly missed throughout the brigade.
“It would be fantastic if as many people as possible turned out to support us on the day.”
All money raised for the Trudy Ramsden Memorial Fund will be distributed to Yorkshire Cancer Research and the Fire Services’ National Benevolent Fund – the UK fire services’ charity.
The cash raised for Mirfield Sports and Social Club will pay for events such as the fire station’s annual open day, the Santa’s Grotto and a pie and peas night, from which all proceeds go to charity.
The fire engine pull will start at 2pm and will be followed by karaoke in the Swan pub.
