More than 100 children took part in West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Play with a football, not with fire day.

The event at Manningham Sports Centre in Bradford combined football coaching with fire safety, and gave the fire and rescue service and police the opportunity to show young people the consequences of arson and car crime.

The day kicked off with football coaching and culminated in a knock-out tournament and penalty shoot-out competition, which was won by Zakir Aslam, nine.

Organiser and Fire Safety Officer, Mohammed Ali, said: “The aim of the day was to engage young people aged between nine and 16 in a fun, sport-orientated environment, while promoting fire safety awareness and education.

“The event was a huge success. Young people from the local area had the opportunity to meet firefighters who serve their area and a chance to look around a fire engine.”

Medals for the competition winners were presented on the day by West Yorkshire Assistant Chief Fire Officer Craig McIntosh.
