DISC CUTTER

A disc cutter is available for use within the Brigade and is carried on the Heavy Rescue Tender.
The model is the Stihl TS 360 AVSE Super 'Cutquik' and is powered by an in-built, 60cc, two-stroke, petrol engine.

Two types of abrasive wheel are provided according to the material to be cut, stone and steel.

Personal protection is in the form of standard fire kit (except fire helmet) including gloves and a safety helmet fitted with visor and ear defenders.

Respiratory protection from dusts created during cutting operations must be worn at all times.

The Stihl two-stroke oil issued should be mixed at a ratio of 40 parts petrol to 1 part oil. The saw fuel tank should be topped up when necessary with mixture from the BLUE fuel container provided for that purpose.

The wheels use an abrasive rather than a slicing action to cut through the material. The composition of a wheel for stone cutting or steel cutting, is determined by the grain size, grade, structure and bonding nature of the aggregates used in manufacture. Stone discs cannot be readily distinguished from steel discs by the naked eye. Identification, therefore, is by reference to the label affixed to each disc.

Stone cutting discs can also be used for concrete, masonry, brick and reinforced concrete cutting. The metal reinforcement bars in concrete can be cut without the need to change discs. However, if used regularly for this purpose, wear to the disc will be significantly increased.

Steel cutting discs can be used for all ferrous metal cutting. Both types of disc are 300mm in diameter with an achievable cutting depth of 100mm.

Note: These discs cannot be used to cut timber.

The cutting disc is secured to the spindle, which in turn is belt driven from the engine. The maximum acceptable spindle speed for this machine is 5100 rpm.
