West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service's Training Centre offer various commercial training courses.
The quality of the training provided is continually assessed to meet both the Charter Mark standards and the ISO 9001:2000 requirements.
The centre was built in the mid-sixties and has kept pace with technology and training demands through a series of upgrades and modernization programmes.
The main building contains classrooms, lecture theatre, dining area, offices, and sleeping accommodation. The additional buildings have been purpose built to allow a variety of training needs to be met.
The multi-purpose Training Centre has been designed primarily for breathing apparatus exercises. It has real fire capability and is fitted with 2 LPG compartment fire rooms and 1 LPG cooker fire simulator. A range of exercises can be run within the building including ship fire scenarios, small domestic fires, and large industrial fires etc.
This building was designed with a smoke collection and scrubber facility to ensure that as much of the smoke as possible is captured and scrubbed before being released into the atmosphere. Furthermore, the wood that is burned in the live fire exercises is carefully chosen so as not to cause pollution. Click here for environmental information regarding the constitution of the wood used.
The tray facility is situated next to the drill square and allows students the opportunity to experience a large oil fire scenario. It has been used to good effect on basic recruit courses, operational courses, and commercial training courses.
The Training Centre has seven dedicated training rooms which have a total capacity on a daily basis of approximately 210 students. This equates to 70,000 students days a year if the facility was run on a seven day working basis with full capacity each day.
The staff at the Training Centre go through a comprehensive induction process to ensure the quality of their input. Each instructor must gain the nationally recognized qualification to prove sector competence in the area they teach. They will also gain City & Guilds Cluster Awards for coaching and teaching along with the 'D' Awards for assessing students' practical skills. This ensures the quality of the teaching given at the centre and is an externally auditable process.
The Training Centre provides a comprehensive range of courses that cater for all the requirements of the brigade. These requirements have been assessed as meeting the health and safety needs of the organization to ensure safe systems of work are in place to meet all operational requirements.
The Training Centre ensures that it efficiently meets the needs internal and external customers via effective monitoring of quality and the use of management systems that accurately identify training needs and solutions.
The centre has sufficient spare capacity in terms of space and resources to facilitate any additional demands that may be placed on it.
Subject to sufficient numbers, courses can be tailor-made to meet individual training needs.
