The Standards Committee


Role:


The main role of the Standards Committee is to


•  promote and maintain high standards of conduct for Members, and


•  help Members follow the Authority’s Code of Conduct


The Committee also has more specific functions which include;


•  providing advice on the adoption of a local Code of Conduct


•  monitoring the effectiveness of the Code


•  responsibility for Member training on the Code


•  assessment and review of complaints about Members


•  adjudication of complaints and awards


The Fire Authority originally adopted its own Code of Conduct in April 2002

The Members


The West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority’s Standards Committee has 9
Members – 6 elected Members and 3 independent Members – it is chaired by
one of the independent Members - Mr M Wilkinson.

Role of the Independent Members


Independent members are important in helping to increase public confidence
in local government and send a clear signal that the committee acts fairly and
impartially and the independent members have been appointed for periods
ranging from 2 – 4 years following public advertisement of vacancies.
